Bengaluru: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) gears up for the State Assembly elections scheduled to be held in April, 2018, said All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.

“We are ready to go to people seeking them to re-elect us based on the performance and good work done by Siddaramaiah government,’’ Venugopal told reporters here on Thursday.

The KPCC has completed strengthening and constituting 80 per cent of booth and block-level committees.

“Our target was to complete the task by August 31 as per Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s directive but we succeeded in completing 80 per cent of the work. We will be completing the remaining 20 per cent work within a week,’’ the AICC General Secretary said.

He said the KPCC has been busy in building and strengthening cadre-based organization.

“We have been holding review meetings with various block and booth-level committees. We found some of the committees are not effective. We advised to reconstitute such committees,’’ he said.

Ready for debate

Coming down heavily on BJP national president Amit Shah for describing Siddaramaiah government as most corrupt government in the country, he said Amit Shah has no moral right to comment on Siddaramaiah government.

“The people of this country are aware how he had manipulated Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. We are ready to debate with the BJP leaders on the performance of Siddaramaiah government provided they should answer our queries on the Central Government’s performance. The people of Karnataka are aware of the track record of BJP government,’’ the AICC General Secretary said.

I-T raids

He said the recent raids on some Congress ministers’ residences and offices by the Income Tax Department would not help the BJP in the next Assembly elections.

“We are not blaming the I-T Department for conducting raids but such raids should be reasonable and should not be for political mileage. BJP leaders are of the opinion that such raids on Congress leaders’ residences and offices will help them to win Assembly elections but they are set to lose the election,’’ he said.

Polarising society

He blamed the BJP leaders for trying to polarize society and people based on caste and religion. “BJP leaders are experts in polarizing people by organising rallies and protests but Congress leaders are not afraid of them. We are ready to face such challenges. We are not afraid of Amit Shah’s frequent visits to Karnataka. Shah, as the president of a national political party, has the right to visit Karnataka,’’ he said.
