Bengaluru: The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has decided to hike the electricity charges at the rate of 33 paisa per unit here on Thursday, May 30.
According to KERC, the hike in price will be effective from June 1.
Excluding the electricity supply companies coming under BESCOM, the rest will come under the new rates.
The rates will be hiked phase wise from 15 paisa gradually to 33 paisa, which constitutes 4.80 percent rise in unit price.
According to KERC, in the electricity bills, the energy charge and the fixed charge are not matching. The fixed charge was collected through the actual electricity bill amount, due to which only 24.70 percent of the electricity bill share is being collected.
Because of this pattern, the KERC has decided to go for hike in price every year, gradually.
Excluding the water pumpsets in the scheme, the commission has decided to hike the charges by Rs 5 to 10 per kilowatt. With this, the electricity rates are going to shoot up.
The commission has also listed out some reasons for the hike which includes hike in price of purchasing electricity units from the newly built thermal power stations, 16 percent rise in price pertaining to electricity purchase from the renewable sources of energy, wage revision of labourers, increase in interest rates and other financial services by 12 percent and many more.
