Bengaluru: Fisheries Minister Pramod Madhwaraj has opposed the Goa government’s move to impose tax on trucks transporting fish for sale outside the State and termed it “selfishness” on the part of Goa.
Terming it as a hasty decision, the minister said the Goa government’s plan would cause major problems.
In a bid to ensure better availability of good quality fish in the local markets, the Goa government was mulling over imposing tax on trucks carrying fish for sale to States like Karnataka.
“If the Goa government levies fees on the border other States will follow suit and this will cause major problems among the States. This proposal is not in good taste,’’ the minister said.
A lot of fish from Goa is being transported to border districts, including Belagavi.
The plan was following availability of poor quality of fish in local markets of Goa and export of high quality fish to other States.
