Bengaluru: Kannada writers, intellectuals and poets on Wednesday said the injustice to the state in Cauvery water dispute would compel the people of Karnataka to opt for a separate Kannada country.

The meeting convened at Ravindra Kalakshetra opined the need of the hour for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and find an amicable solution to the sharing of Cauvery water between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

“The silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue makes people opt for a separate country for Kannada-speaking people. I want the Prime Minister to ensure that such need does not arise. The need of the hour is to cancel the agreement made between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in 1924 and sign a new agreement based on the actual situation in both the states. I want all the MPs from Karnataka to resign demanding for a new agreement between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on sharing Cauvery water,’’ said Marula Siddappa.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Chandrasekhara Patil said that the Supreme Court had intervened in Cauvery water dispute even though it is not supposed to as per the Constitution. “The leaders of two national political parties have surrendered themselves to their respective high commands. It is the main reason for the setback to Karnataka in sharing Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu,’’ Prof. Patil said.

G K Govinda Rao said that the state BJP leaders and Union Ministers representing Karnataka have been working against the state. “These leaders are busy in issuing statements stating that Prime Minister can not intervene in Cauvery water dispute,’’ Rao said.
