Bengaluru: Hundreds of residents from Jayamahal and other areas came out to form a human chain, stretching nearly 1.5 km from Fun World junction till Mehkri Circle, to protest the proposal to cut 112 trees as part of the Jayamahal Road widening project.

In October last year, thousands had turned up to form a similar human chain against the proposed steel flyover project that is expected to claim 812 trees on Ballari Road.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has called for written or oral objections to the proposal to cut trees on Jayamahal Road. The human chain, said the protesters, was part of a message to the city to show that citizens will not stand idle while the trees are chopped.

The protest saw people of varied age groups venting their ire. While Jayamahal residents had launched a signature campaign against the proposal, a majority of the protesters had come from other areas after a call from Citizens for Bengaluru, which was formed to oppose the steel flyover project.
