Bengaluru: AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will make a public appearance on May 22, perhaps the first time in seven months, the party said on Tuesday.
The AIADMK said Jayalalithaa would offer floral tributes to the party’s founder M.G.Ramachandran’s (MGR) statue, and DMK founder C.N. Annadurai’s and DK founder E.V. Ramaswamy’s statues here that day. Also on May 22, the AIADMK has called a meeting of its legislators at the party headquarters here.
Though the agenda has not been specified, it is widely believed that Jayalalithaa may be elected leader of the AIADMK legislature party, paving the way for her to become the chief minister again.
On Sunday, P. Vetrivel, a party legislator from Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency here, resigned, now, the AIADMK strength in the 234-seat assembly comes down by one to 150, excluding the speaker.
The Karnataka High Court upheld her appeal against the conviction and acquitted her. Even after that she did not make any public appearance.
Karnataka govt needs time to receive instructions from ‘high command’
Meanwhile the Karnataka government said it would take “some more days” to decide on filing an appeal in the Supreme Court against acquittal of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the disproportionate assets case as the relevant files had to be studied.
“It (government) will take some more days to decide on filing an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Jayalalithaa verdict,” said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra, as exactly a week lapsed after the Karnataka High Court gave a clean chit to the AIADMK chief and three others clearing them of “all charges” in the case.
Jayachandra said Special Public Prosecutor B V Acharya, the state law department and Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar, have submitted the files pertaining to the verdict and it would take four to five days to study it.
Asked if it was necessary for the issue to be discussed in the state cabinet, he said, “I will take a decision on it too after studying the files.”
