
Bengaluru: The National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2018 rankings, announced here on Tuesday, April 3 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), has named the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru as the best university in the country.
In the NIRF rankings, which ranks higher education institutes, IIT Madras has come in second followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur.
The various institutes were ranked under nine different categories viz, Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture and Law. New categories were also added this time by the NIRF like total budget and utilisation, university examinations, how many students gain admissions into top institutions, and combined metric for quality of publications.
In the college category, Miranda House, Delhi was named the best and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad was named the top management institute.
IISc was followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in the university category.
The NIRF was launched by the Honourable Minister for Human Resource development on September 29, 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country and has been accepted by the Ministry.
The IISc came into being in 1909 and was founded by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Maharaja of Mysore and the government of India, as stated by the institute’s website.
