Husband donates the organs of brain dead wife, saves three lives

Bengaluru: Four doctors of Manipal Hospitals worked for 18 hours to transplant organs of a brain-dead donor to save lives of three patients. The liver, heart, and one kidney were all transplanted on the same day.

Twenty-six-year-old Keerthi, a nurse by profession who suffered cardio-respiratory arrest and hypoxic brain damage was rushed to Manipal Hospitals. She was declared brain-dead on May 2.

Keerthi’s husband who gave his consent for donating his wife’s organs said that his wife was a nurse and belonged to a noble profession. He was glad that in her death too she performed her duty by giving a new life to many people.

Four doctors Dr Devananda N S, HoD and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr Anand Shenoy, Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Vishwanath Siddini, Consultant Nephrologist and Dr Olithselvan, Chairman and Hepatalogist, Manipal Hospitals, worked for 18 hours to ensure that the transplants were successful.

Keerthi’s liver, heart, and one kidney were transplanted to three different patients at Manipal Hospitals. The corneas were allotted to Narayana Nethralaya and the other kidney to Victoria Hospital.

A diabetic with renal failure received the kidney; a 52-year-old patient underwent the liver transplant while a 34-year-old IT professional was the beneficiary of the heart transplant.
