Bengaluru: Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy had, on Friday, October 5, submitted a report to the Central government seeking financial help for the state. The report included information about the destruction of the National Highways, state highways and the roads connecting different districts due to heavy rain and landslides experienced across the state recently.
Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Devegowda met Home Minister Rajanath Singh on Friday and informed him that districts like Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Uttar Kannada, Madikeri, Chikamagaluru, Shivamogga and Belagavi have incurred heavy losses due to landslides and heavy rain, and requested that the Central government lend a helping hand to the state.
Reportedly, 2,910 kms of roads, 419 bridges and 72 public buildings were destroyed during the heavy rains and landslides, which has resulted in a loss of Rs 2,078.88 crores.
Kumaraswamy informed the Central government that an estimated cost of Rs 1,329.88 crores would be required to re-build these structures and roads. He also requested the Centre to release Rs 250 crores immediately towards the repairs of the National Highways.
Speaking to the press after submitting the reports, Kumaraswamy said, “We have discussed about all the problems that the people of Karnataka are facing. Some districts have faced problems due to heavy rains, whereas other districts are facing problems due to a shortfall of rains. Initially, we had sought permission to meet the PM, but due to his busy schedule, he asked us to meet with Rajanath Singh.”
