Bengaluru: In a historic move, 2-day Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned from his post before the trust vote here on May 19, after which Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R Vala invited Janata-Dal-Secular’s legislative party leader HD Kumaraswamy to form the next government in the state.
After the results on May 15 showed a hung Assembly with the BJP winning only 104 seats, eight seats short of the simple majority, the JD(S) and the Congress swiftly formed a post-poll alliance and approached the governor to form the government.
The Governor however, chose to give the BJP, the single largest party, a chance to form the government. After having given them 15 days time, the Congress and the JD(S) approached the Supreme Court and the latter ordered the BJP to prove its majority by May 15 at 4 pm.
With the deadline moving closer too fast, the BJP was in a soup, trying to win over other MLAs and convince them to join them, BSY admitted as much during his speech.
Having failed to secure the required numbers to prove their majority during the floor test, BSY gave a 20-minute long emotional speech, promising to keep the fight on for the people of Karnataka and the farmers and the downtrodden. After having said all that he wanted to say, BS Yeddyurappa walked out of the Assembly followed by the other BJP legislators and leaders.
After meeting with the Governor at the Raj Bhavan, HD Kumaraswamy told reporters later during the day, “The Governor has invited me to form the next government as the leader of the JD(S) legislative party with the support of the Congress, which is our alliance partner.”
He also said the Governor had given him 15 days to prove that he had majority in the 224-member legislative assembly, whose strength is currently 222.
“I have decide to form the JD-S-Congress government on May 21 by taking oath at 11 a.m. in the Kanteerva stadium,” added Kumaraswamy. It is reported that his Deputy CM iss likely to be KPCC president G Parameshwara.
