HC directs BBMP to compensate dead pourakarmika’s family

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been asked by the High Court to pay compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the family of a pourakarmika who died due to suffocation while cleaning an underground drain.

Chenchaiah, a BBMP worker, died on January 18, 2014 while cleaning up a UGD in K P Agrahara limits.

The compensation to the family of the deceased worker must be paid within six weeks, said Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri

The court has also asked BBMP to give other benefits to the deceased’s family in next six months as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The family of the deceased approached the High Court for higher compensation as BBMP only paid Rs 2 lakh.
