Bengaluru: A pair of four-month-old female twins died a day after they were administered five-in-one pentavalent vaccine at the BBMP’s Bapujinagar Primary Health Care centre on Friday.

The twins born to Hemalatha and Lunesh Singh from Rajasthan had received a shot of vaccine to prevent five life-threatening ailments — Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis B and pneumonia due to Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b) on Thursday.
The couple, residents of Avalahalli in Deepanjali Nagar said that while the twins were normal on Thursday, on Friday they developed high fever and refused to accept feeds. Soon they started frothing at the mouth and even before they could be rushed to the hospital they breathed their last.
However, the BBMP Chief Health Officer Vatsala has said that 38 children were given the same vaccine from the same batch and all of them are healthy. Further, a single vial is used to vaccine 10 babies.
As per sources, the preliminary investigation has not linked the death to have been caused due to the vaccine.
The doctors, who said the matter had been reported to the State Health Department, said the investigation report would also be sent to the department. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the report will give us a clear picture on the cause of deaths.
The vaccine is administered in four doses at six weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks and 18 months.
