Bengaluru: The government plans to construct a sewage treatment plant (STP) near National Games Village to pave the way for treatment of more than 200 MLD of sewage water flowing from KR Market till Koramangala.

Minister for Bengaluru Development and Town Planning K.J. George, who laid the foundation stone on Friday, said the project would be completed in 24 months.

At present, sewage water from K.R. Market passes through the stretch of BMS Law College, Lalbagh, Adugodi, Lakkasandra and Ejipura before flowing into the storm water drain behind Koramangala Sports Complex.

“Earlier, an old pipe used to carry the water further. But the pipe is several decades old and has corroded,” explained a BWSSB official, underlying the importance of this pumping plant.

With the construction of the pumping plant, at least 210 MLD water will be pumped every day from Koramangala Sports Complex and sent to the Koramangala and Challaghatta Valley (K&C valley) Sewage Treatment Plant, from where the treated water will enter Bellandur lake.

The maintenance of the same, for the next seven years, has been handed over to a private company Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd.

The Koramangala-Challaghatta (K&C) Valley STP at Yamalur was constructed with the aid of Japan International Cooperation Agency and inaugurated last year. The BWSSB currently has 23 STPs treating 997 MLD of sewage water.
