Bengaluru: Despite extensive public awareness campaigns by the government, dignitaries, medical professionals, and social media regarding safety precautions during Diwali firecracker celebrations, unfortunate incidents continue to occur annually. The number of people injured in firecracker-related accidents in Bengaluru has now reached 43.
17 individuals receiving treatment at a government hospital and 26 at a private facility. Additionally, four more individuals sought medical assistance for eye injuries at Minto Eye Hospital in Bangalore. Among them, three suffered minor eye injuries, while a 22-year-old person sustained severe damage and required surgical intervention, as confirmed by the hospital report.
Between Sunday and Monday, Narayana Nethralaya treated 26 patients injured by firecrackers, including 13 children. All patients received necessary medication, and thankfully, no surgeries were required for any of them. Five patients had severe injuries, while twelve were treated as outpatients. Most of the injured individuals were residents of Bengaluru, with one hailing from Bihar.
A three-and-a-half-year-old child from Ramamurthy Nagar sustained a minor eye injury when a spark from a firecracker hit the eye while lighting a candle. In a separate incident, a young man from Srirampur had an unfortunate encounter with a firecracker that severely damaged his eyeball and caused internal bleeding. Similarly, a person from Bannerghatta suffered an eye injury due to a Lakshmi firecracker.
