Bengaluru: After the use Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols were banned in view of their environmental impact, people began using everyday items in a creative way to celebrate Ganesh Chathurthi.
Devotees crafted a 30-foot idol out of 9,000 coconuts and installed it near the Puttengally Ganesha Temple in Bengaluru. The entire project took over 70 devotees, a span of 20 days to complete.
The devotees also used more than 20 varieties of vegetables to create the idol.
One of the devotees informed that it is a tradition at this temple to install an eco-friendly Ganesha idol. Last year, the idol was made out of sugarcane.
After five days, the idol will be removed and the coconuts and vegetables will be distributed to the devotees, along with some halva that will be prepared by chefs called specifically for this purpose, he added.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day festival that begins from September 2.
