Bengaluru: The state wildlife board, which met on Thursday decided to increase the compensation for the people who die in the wild animal attack from existing Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs.

This comes as a big relief for thousands of families staying in the buffer zones of the forests in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chamarajanagara, Mysuru, Chikkkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Every year tens of people die in these areas following the wild animal attack.
The meeting also decided to increase the honorarium of the guards who participate in wild elephant-related operations.

Another major decision in the meeting was an underground power project across the river Sharavati in Shivamogga. Greens are opposing this project.
