Bengaluru: Former chief minister of Karnataka and senior Congress leader S M Krishna has quit the preliminary membership of the Congress party on January 28. While the move of 84-year-old politician left eyebrows raised, it has made way for several speculations. As per sources in the BJP, Krishna had met BJP National President Amith Shah on January 23, precisely five days before he took the major step of breaking all ties with the party he stood by for several decades. The rumours of Krishna joining the BJP have been making rounds ever since his exit from the Congress, but no official statement on the same has been done neither by the BJP nor by Krishna.

Meanwhile, BJP State President and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has opined that if S M Krishna joins the BJP, then the party will be strengthened by many folds.

Addressing reporters in Malleswaram party office on Sunday, BSY has said that if time permits, he would meet Krishna in person today (Jan 30) and get to know his next political move.

“It would be wrong on my part to unilaterally make a statement without speaking to him,” said Yeddyurappa.

Even Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar have expressed their happiness over Krishna’s decision to quit Congress party and had said that if he is willing to join the BJP, he would be welcomed with open arms.

Cong is closed chapter

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters SM Krishna has said that Congress is a closed chapter of his life and hence there is no question of thinking over his decision to take back the resignation.

“While it is true that there is no going back, I share a bond with AICC National President Sonia Gandhi,” he said manifesting his respect for Sonia Gandhi even after exit.

At the same time, Krishna opted to remain silent on queries on his meeting to be held with BS Yeddyurappa.

The Congress which was already shaken in Karnataka by resignation of Srinivas Prasad, death of Mahadeva Prasad, Meti sex scandal, Jarkiholi IT raid has now suffered a major jolt by Krishna’s resignation from the party. But, it looks like BJP has a reason to rejoice.
