Church Street blast case: NIA files chargesheet

Bengaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against the prime accused in the Bengaluru Church Street blast case Alamzeb Afridi on Monday, July 25.

In a press release, officials from NIA stated that Afridi, a member of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), had planted an explosive at a restaurant on busy the Church Street on December 28, 2014 in a bid to target some Israeli delegation who were expected to dine at the restaurant that evening. Afridi was acting at the behest of a handler who had told him about the visit of the Israeli delegation.

NIA officials arrested Afridi alias Mohamed Rafeeq, one year after the incident. During investigation, it was revealed that Afridi was also involved in blasts that occurred in other cities.

The NIA officials had arrested Afridi alias Mohammed Rafiq alias Javed from his house in Doddanagamangala near Parappana Agrahara on January 22 earlier this year.

The press release also said that Afridi has been charged with Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the IPC, and other sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
