Bangalore: The founder of a fertility clinic in Nandini Layout was arrested on recently for allegedly cheating a couple by giving them a child that was not fathered by the husband. The accused K T Gurumurthi (in pic) was nabbed in a joint operation by CCB officials and the North-division police.
According to police, Dhan Bosco reportedly approached the fertility clinic in 2008 as he and his wife, Sarala Devi, were incapable of conceiving a child. Subsequently, Gurumurthi promised to arrange a surrogate mother for the couple and took Rs 3.5 lakh from them, along with a sample of semen from Bosco.
Seven months later, Bosco received a call from Gurumurthi saying a girl child had been born through the surrogacy. The couple was initially shocked that the baby was born so prematurely, but Gurumurthi reportedly insisted that it was Bosco’s, and threatened that the couple would not receive a refund even if they decided not to accept the child.
With a heavy heart, the couple decided to accept the baby and began caring for it though they had doubts. However, the child was reportedly born with health complications that only worsened through the years.
As the child’s health deteriorated, Bosco began doubting that he was not the girl’s biological father.
Bosco claims that Sarala passed away recently due to the shock and depression caused by the entire saga. When Bosco got a paternity test done to see if the child’s DNA matched his, he was shocked to see the report clearly state that Bosco was not the child’s father.
Police arrested Gurumurthi after Bosco lodged a complaint with the DNA report as proof.
National award-winning actress Tara Anuradha, Bhavya and a host of other actresses were among his marquee clientele. Gurumurthy never missed an opportunity to flaunt his top connections. Last year, when Tara attained motherhood under his medical supervision, billboards featuring the doctor and his highprofile client dotted the skyline of Bangalore.
Gurumurthy was a regular speaker on leading local Kannada TV channels, making him one of the most sought after fertility experts of the city. But the police probe revealed that Gurumurthy had merely obtained a B. Sc degree from the Lucknow University and a lab technician course.
According to the police, Gurumurthy obtained an ‘honorary doctorate’ from a Sri Lankan university in an effort to legitimise his medical trade. Many of the other certificates in his possession declaring him to be a fertility specialist and embryologist are not genuine, they said.
