Bengaluru: The death toll in the collapse of the under-construction building at Kasavanahalli in Bengaluru on Thursday has risen to five.

According to the police, as many as 20 labourers working on the site were trapped in the debris.

Over 150 people from Fire and Emergency Services, NDRF and Civil Defence, continued search operations more than 24 hours after the incident.

After a nightlong operation, two workers were rescued by the NDRF personnel. Hazrath, 18, who was rescued early on Friday, was shifted to a private hospital nearby, where he succumbed, as he suffered internal injuries.

Late on Friday, a body was recovered, and it was identified as that of Raja, the watchman of the building.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abdul Ahad said the death toll could be higher. “By Saturday morning, we may recover one or two more bodies,” he said.

Another labourer, Dhirender Kumar, 24, was also rescued early on Friday, and was taken to hospital.

According to officials, the rescue team did not use heavy machinery fearing that the building structure might collapse on the people trapped. The police and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel were assisting the NDRF teams.

Meanwhile, the Bellandur police are on the lookout for the building owner and the site supervisor who are on the run. A special team has been formed to arrest them while Sameera, co-owner of the building, has been detained for questioning.
