Bengaluru: A Rs.100 crore grant declared for the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) by the state government in its budget is expected to give a temporary relief to the corporation which has been reeling under losses.

The BMTC had submitted a proposal for a grant of Rs.300 crores to the government, to come out of the losses. Responding to this, the government granted Rs 100 cr and also agreed to initiate the service of 80 electric buses by the BMTC.

There is a proposal in the budget to form Integrated Land Transport Authority. Hopefully, this will lead to a better coordination between the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), BMTC, Bangalore Development Authority and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and will provide a hassle-free travelling experience for the commuters

BMTC Managing Director Ponnuraj was happy that the government has responded to their appeal. “We also requested them to revise the bus fare due to rising petrol price and the maintenance charge. That is also under verification. The Integrated Land Transport Authority is a good concept which is already in various parts of the world. We will prepare a work plan to implement that,” he said.
