BESCOM to shift transformers planted on footpath

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Electricity Company Limited (BESCOM) will spend as much as Rs. 330 crores on transferring the electricity transformers which are located on the footpaths.

According to the BESCOM officials, as per the survey carried out by the company in the city, out of total 45,000 transformers in the city, 9,000 are on the footpath. Now company has decided to shift all these transformers to safe places.

All started with the electrocution of Manojkumar Patil in May, 2013 at the time of rain on Church Street. Aggrieved by this incident, Patil’s family had moved to state High Court seeking direction to the BESCOM to shift all transformers on the footpath to avoid such accidental deaths. On July 19, 2014 state HC had pulled the BESCOM for erecting the transformers on footpath. Now as per the HC directions, the BESCOM has decided to shift all its transformers from footpaths to safe places.
