Bengaluru: In the Bengaluru Urban district alone, the Karnataka Revenue Department has identified a staggering 38,947 acres of government land encroached upon by private entities, with a total of 14,660 cases reported. Yelahanka taluk tops the list with 12,764 acres encroached (1,253 cases), followed by Anekal taluk at 10,531 acres (1,226 cases).
In other Bengaluru taluks, the encroachment figures are as follows: Bengaluru South taluk – 8,090 acres (6,759 cases), Bengaluru East taluk – 4,475 acres (4,762 cases), and Bengaluru North taluk – 3,086 acres (660 cases).
Bengaluru Rural district also witnessed widespread encroachments, with private parties illegally occupying 12,609 acres and a total of 8,647 reported cases. Consequently, the combined encroachment in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural stands at 51,555 acres.
Over the years, efforts have been made to address the issue, resulting in the clearance of encroachments on 16,486 acres of land (4,874 cases) in Bengaluru Urban and 11,778 acres (7,560 cases) in Bengaluru Rural.
The broader state scenario reveals a concerning trend, with approximately 14.72 lakh acres of government land encroached across Karnataka, constituting nearly a fourth of the total available government land in the state (63.32 lakh acres).
In response to these findings, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda emphasized that strict action is being taken against officials involved in facilitating such encroachments. He expressed concern over government officials colluding with the land mafia and illicitly transferring land to them, stating that the state government is committed to addressing this issue through stringent measures against corrupt officials.
