Bengaluru: After receiving several complaints from the public over traffic cops fleecing them by lodging false traffic offence cases, the traffic police have now been equipped with GPS based body worn cameras to prevent corruption in the department and safeguard public.
Hi-tech cameras with video recording feature will record all vents that occur on the road from the time a traffic offence is noticed to the registration of complaint, when cops remain on duty.
According to the city traffic department higher-ups, the cameras will prevent cops from taking bribes from offenders too. According to Additional Traffic commissioner (Traffic) R Hitendra, around 50 cameras have been procured and given to the personnel handling traffic.
Based on the inputs, more body worn cameras will be procured to equip traffic police personnel, Hitendra added.
Traffic cops have been trained in using the new cameras which weigh less than 150 grams and can record events for 10 hours with the existing battery-back up.
Public have given mixed reactions over the new cameras where some like the idea whereas others complain of cameras invading into one’s privacy.
