As Bengaluru anticipates a scorching summer, individuals laboring outdoors for extended hours face heightened risks of heat-related illnesses. Following expert advice to minimize exposure to the mid-day sun, essential outdoor workers such as drivers, postal workers, and pourakarmikas are adopting measures to safeguard their well-being.
AS Chandrashekhar, a postman at Bengaluru’s General Post Office, emphasized the importance of precautions. He mentioned receiving essential items like umbrellas, caps, and bags as part of their uniform kit to shield themselves from extreme weather conditions. Chandrashekhar highlighted the significance of residents’ support, who often offer refreshments like juice and buttermilk, aiding in their respite during breaks.
Autorickshaw drivers, although finding some relief while in motion, encounter difficulties while waiting for passengers. Bhuvaneshwari, an autorickshaw driver, shared strategies like staying hydrated with cooling liquids, parking in shaded areas while waiting, and wearing loose clothing to mitigate the heat’s impact on their health.
Srinivas, a member of the Pourakarmikas Sangha, advocated for a dual-shift system to combat the summer heat, proposing a schedule adjustment to minimize direct exposure during peak temperatures.
Despite preparations and precautions, both government and private healthcare facilities report a lack of patients affected by heatwave-related ailments so far. Bengaluru, historically known for its relatively cool climate, typically experiences fewer instances of heatwave issues unless exceptional cases of heat strokes occur.
