The police, in collaboration with fact-checking units, successfully located Nayaz Khan in Konanakunte locality of Bengaluru, leading to his arrest. Prior to this incident, there were no known cases against Nayaz Khan, although he was notably active on social media platforms.
In his statement to the police, Nayaz Khan explained that his anger was triggered upon seeing a video featuring the burqa-clad girl and her friend chanting ‘Jai Sri Ram.’ His response on social media, where he threatened to “cut them into pieces” if they continued to chant in their attire, was made in the heat of the moment.
The Talaghattapura police have filed a case in connection with this incident and are currently conducting an investigation.
The controversy began when a video went viral, showing the burqa-clad girl and her friend, who wore a skullcap and had a cross around his neck, chanting ‘Jai Sri Ram.’ In response, the accused youth demanded that they remove their burqa and skullcap before expressing their sentiments.
A social media user under the pseudonym ‘The Right Wing Guy’ posted the threatening video, tagging the Bengaluru Police and calling for action. The post emphasized the girl’s right to wear a burqa and express herself freely.
The incident has ignited discussions on social media regarding religious tolerance and freedom of expression.
