Bengaluru: The greenery in the City is decreasing day by day and the City is becoming a concrete jungle. Trees are being cut down in the name of development works and in the last 4 years, BBMP has cut down 1,671 trees for various projects.

According to a report prepared by the IISC in 2014, there are only 14 lakh trees in Bengaluru. This means there is one tree for 16 persons. It has warned that if this continues, the number of trees will come down, the greenery will decline and pollution levels will also increase. However, the felling of trees in the City is on the rise due to various reasons, including development works. From 2019-20 to 2022-23, 1,671 trees have been uprooted so far, thereby reducing the greenery further.

Trees are cut down due to various reasons like construction of flyover, road-widening, metro work, etc. After appealing to the BBMP Forest Department for the same, the staff appointed by the BBMP Forest Department will cut down the trees. Also, restrictions have been imposed on private individuals from cutting down trees.
