Bengaluru: Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George on Wednesday announced the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would construct around 100 skywalks in Bengaluru city for the benefit of pedestrians.

Speaking with media persons after inaugurating a skywalk constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.50 crore at Konena Agrahara on HAL Airport Road in the city, Minister George said the BBMP would construct skywalks wherever it is necessary in the city. “The BBMP had floated tenders inviting bidders for the construction of 100 skywalks at various locations in the city. The skywalks will be useful for the pedestrians who find it difficult to cross the road during the peak hours. The skywalks also generate revenue for the BBMP. Each skywalk can generate Rs 2 lakh advertisement tax to the BBMP,’’ the minister said.

He said the people of Bengaluru have been using nine skywalks constructed at different locations in the city and the construction of seven skywalks is in the final stage. “Around 10 underpasses are ready for inauguration,’’ he said.

Speaking on the occasion, BBMP Mayor G Padmavathi said the civic body would construct skywalks at densely populated areas in the city. “The skywalk with two lifts at Konena Agrahara will be a great help for many techies who are working at various companies in this area. It will facilitate them to cross the road without any hassles,’’ the mayor said.
