Bangalore: The Bruhat Bangalore MahanagaraPalike (BBMP) has decided to institute a new annual award to honour women achievers. The award is proposed to be named after Lakshmidevi, the daughter-in-law of Kempegowda, who is the architect of modern Bengaluru.

Similar to the Kempegowda Awards, the Lakshmidevi Award will be presented to the achievers during the Kempegowda Jayanti, which is celebrated every year by the BBMP. The Lakshmidevi Award will include a citation, cash and a statuette of Lakshmidevi.

This would be awarded to 10 achievers every year, starting 2015. Women who have excelled in fields like arts, music, sports etc. would be chosed for the awards.

The proposal to incorporate the awards would be placed before the BBMP council for final approval on 22 August.
