Bengaluru: The BBMP asked its 198 marshals who were appointed to monitor the cleanliness in public places to start collecting Rs.200 fine on those who walk the roads of Bengaluru City without masks. On April 30, the BBMP had issued an order making facial masks – covering the mouth and the nose – compulsory in public places and in any workplace with more than five people.

This decision was taken after complaints that a majority of the city residents are not following the compulsory mask rule. Public movement increased dramatically after lockdown 4.0 ended as people got down to their regular pre covid19 routines.

The marshals are empowered to penalize first-time offenders with Rs.200 and Rs.500 for the next offense and thereafter. This is as per a revised order issued on May 5, 2020, by the BBMP Commissioner. The Earlier order issued on April 30, 2020, had fixed the fines at Rs: 1000.
