Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahagara Palike (BBMP) has drafted certain rules for dog owners.
The rules which will soon be implemented have a clause of one dog per flat. Moreover dogs of larger breeds which tend to be aggressive will not be allowed in the residential apartments. Besides this it will be necessary for people having dogs in their homes to procure licenses that will cost around Rs 250.
People living in independent houses will be allowed to rear two to three dogs subject to them paying the licence fee for each of these dogs. Anyone who rears dogs without procuring the licence are proposed to be penalized.
The proposal of the draft rules prepared by the animal husbandry department of the corporation has been sent to the government for its approval. Once the government approves it and issues notification, these rules will come into force.
BBMP had earlier too in 2013, sought to make it mandatory for dog owners to obtain licences however the same was turned down by the urban development department and BBMP was asked to submit a revised draft. The corporation has now mooted fresh proposals, duly making the rules a bit lenient.
The city, which did not have any rules governing raising of dogs, is proposing to implement the system to have a sort of control over the issue. There have been many cases in which children and others have suffered on account of street dog attacks.
Such rules are being followed in few cities like Mumbai and Chandigarh.
