Bangalore :A legislature panel has recommended that students should not be allowed to take mobile phones to schools and colleges as young girls are “lured” by miscreants who strike up a conversation with them on cellphones, which sometimes leads to rape of minors.
The legislature committee on women and child development, headed by Shakuntala Shetty, in its report tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, has also recommended that the State government take steps for effective implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, to stop female foeticide.
Cases of foetal sex determination are still being reported despite a ban for the two decades, the report states. The government should enforce the Act strictly, and severe penal action should be initiated against those who conduct foetal sex determination, the panel has recommended.
The panel has also recommended that police stations be made “women-friendly.” Women who visit police stations to lodge complaints must be treated with respect. More “all-women police stations” should be opened and CCTV?cameras installed in all the police stations.
Other recommendations by the panel include making it mandatory for installation of CCTV?cameras in all public transport buses and reservation of 33 per cent of the total sites allotted by the Karnataka Housing?Board (KHB),?for women.
