Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered issue of notice to the State government and the Bengaluru police on a petition, filed by 20-year-old Higio Gungtey from Arunachal Pradesh, seeking a speedy and effective probe in the criminal case registered against his landlord, who had allegedly assaulted the petitioner and racially abused him on March 6.

Higio Gungtey is a second-year pre-university student of Christ University. He has stated in the petition that the police had not taken any further action nor updated him about the progress of the probe even after he lodged an additional complaint on March 13 invoking some non-bailable offences, including Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the landlord Hemanth Kumar.

The offences invoked against Hemanth Kumar based on the first complaint lodged with the police on March 9 were bailable ones.

It was pointed out in the petition that the first complaint was lodged on March 9 after he was treated in a private hospital for the injuries that he had suffered in the alleged assault.

Justice A.S. Bopanna has adjourned further hearing while asking the authorities to respond to the petition.
