Bengaluru: Gratitude, they say is the biggest reward and this was proven to be true on Sunday evening as lakhs of people came out to clap for healthcare workers who have toiled relentlessly, putting their lives at risk to serve the people in a time of crisis.
The coronavirus fear has gripped the entire nation. Train services, local transport, schools and colleges have been closed down, but the medicos and para-medical staff continue to work day and night to make sure that the disease stays under control.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after announcing the ‘Janata Curfew’ on Sunday, also called upon the people to come out and clap to pat the backs of the healthcare professionals.
Following this calls scores of people across the nation stepped out of their homes to say ‘Thank You’ to the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who have been keeping us safe.
In Karnataka too, the participation of people was overwhelming.
Leading the applause to Corona warriors, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and his family members clapped loudly 5 minutes non-stop outside his personal residence in the city’s northern suburb.
“Yediyurappa thanked the people for their collective response to Modi’s call for expressing gratitude to the medical fraternity in containing the communicable disease risking their health and welfare. He also lauded the people for staying at home through the day as urged by Modi to observe janata curfew,” the official said.
Many people were seen coming out on their balconies and out in their front yard at 5 PM on Sunday, to cheer the medicos and thank them for their selfless service. Some even used conches and vessels to make truly thunderous applause.
Churches in the Mangalore Diocese also joined the members of the public in the grand show of appreciation by ringing the church bells simultaneously at 5 PM for a five munites. It can be recalled that on Saturday, March 21, Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha asked the churches of the Diocese to simultaneously ring the bells at 5 PM today. Temples in the Dakshina Kannada district also joined in the grand gesture.
