Bengaluru: At the Annual Day function that was held recently at the Government Science College at Nrupathunga Road, Ambedkar Veedhi, things took a turn for the worse when a brawl broke out between some alumni and students.
The starting point of the series of unfortunate events was when a group of alumni started passing vulgar comments about one of the female students performing on stage. Sitting close to the group was the said student’s boyfriend – also a student of the same college – who took offence to the comments being made about her.
He requested the group to refrain from using such distasteful language which angered them for having been called out. They then began assaulting the student, punching and kicking him and it soon blew out of proportion when other students tried to interfere and stop the fight. The group then began attacking the other students with chairs leaving some seriously injured.
The programme was soon suspended and the police were brought in. One of the students who was injured in the fight filed a complaint with the police. A case has been registered against 14 of the alumni, 3 of whom have been taken into custody. The rest have absconded and police are hot on their trail. The police also arrested the student whom the group initially attacked as CCTV footage showed that he too threw punches at the group.
The alumni who were involved in the fight had graduated three years prior but were still residing in the hostel, according to some of the students. These alumni are also said to target and pick on their juniors and the students hope that this incident will result in the eviction of the alumni.
The police have said that action would be taken based on the evidence gathered during the course of the investigation and the CCTV footage.
