Bengaluru: Social activist Anna Hazare on Wednesday urged the Central government to implement the M.S. Swaminathan Committee report in letter and spirit.

Addressing a rally organised jointly by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene here, Hazare demanded implementation of the report to prevent more farmer suicides and also to help them improve their economic condition.

“If farmers join hands with the indefinite fast in New Delhi from March 23, seeking action from the government on the Lokpal Bill and comprehensive welfare measure for farmers and improvement in the electoral system, there will be no space in prisons of the country,” he said.

Describing agriculture sector as the backbone of the country, he said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government had forgotten promises made prior to Lok Sabha elections.

“There is not a single instance of a businessman committing suicide for becoming insolvent. I have not seen a government that has imposed 18 per cent of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on drip irrigation and sprinklers being used by farmers,” he said.
