All-party meet asks govt to stick to legislature resolution on Cauvery

Bengaluru: The all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday asked the state government to adhere to the resolution passed by the state legislature on the Supreme Court’s directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Cauvery setback: Karnataka calls all-party meet over SC's latest order-1Speaking with media persons, Minister for Law and Parliament Affairs T B Jayachandra said the leaders of all political parties gave their suggestions to the state government on the Supreme Court’s direction to Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for three days. “All of them wanted the state government not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. They have expressed their views on the issue. The Cabinet will take a decision on this issue. The Cabinet is expected to meet at 2 pm today,” Minister Jayachandra said.

According to Jagadish Shettar, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, the state government should respect the resolution passed by the both houses – Assembly and Council – on Cauvery water issue. “We have told the chief minister not to release Cauvery water. We advised him to respect the resolution passed by the both the houses. We told him to take a decision after attending the meeting convened by Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti,’’ Jagadish Shettar said. He said the BJP would support the decision taken by the state government.

Expressing displeasure over the adverse judgment by the Supreme Court on Cauvery issue, Y S V Datta, JD(S) leader said the state government should not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. “We have made our stand very clear on Cauvery issue. The chief minister told us that a decision would be taken in the Cabinet meeting. Let them take a decision but we are against releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,” Datta said.

He said the government should respect people’s sentiment while obeying the Supreme Court’s order.
