Bengaluru: In a heroic incident, a police saved a youth from committing suicide in Jalahalli on Monday, July 11.

Police constable Yeshwanth who was doing his regular patrolling work in his brand new Ertiga Hoysala patrol vehicle saw a youth walking towards an oncoming train in an attempt to commit suicide.

The youth, who was identified as Charan, a diploma student, was 800 meters away from Yeshwanth. The heroic cop, in a bid to save the youth’s life, drew the vehicle right under the bridge where Charan was walking, switched on the siren in the vehicle, switched on the loudspeaker and started calling out to Charan to step away from the tracks. The driver of the train hearing the commotion noticed Charan on the tracks and brought the Shivamogga-Bengaluru passenger express to a screeching halt. Charan suffered a few bruises on his forehead.

Yeshwanth then spoke to Charan’s brother and called for an ambulance. Charan was then shifted to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital for first aid.

The cop said that Charan was depressed over his poor academic performance and so wanted to commit suicide. “I counseled him and also requested the ambulance technician to inform the doctors on counseling the youth,” said Yeshwanth.

The train passengers and onlookers gave a big round of applause for the constable for his alertness and for saving the youth’s life.
