Bengaluru: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with HAL and other corporate companies started solar power generation units in 47 government schools across the district. Already solar units in 13 schools are operational, generating 200 KWs of electricity. Once all the solar units get operational 480 KWs of solar power can be generated per day.

According to the TERI authorities, this scheme was proposed by the BESCOM and implemented by the agency with the help of various corporate companies. According to the authorities, presently the BESCOM is paying Rs.3 per unit of power generated by the schools. A school can earn upto Rs.16,000 per month by selling the electricity to the BESCOM.

According to the TERI authorities, the solar power panels are purchased locally to improve the business of locals besides hiring two youths per school to service these units. “All these factors have added to the local economy,” informed TERI representatives.

“Those schools with a good academic track record have been selected for the project implementation. The schools are authorized to utilise the money they earned through selling solar power,” informed TERI authorities.
