Bengaluru: Six people got a new lease of life when a 37-year-old brain dead man donated his organs on Friday, March 25.

Basavaraj had met an accident while riding his bike in Tumakuru on March 21 and was admitted to a hospital. Having suffered head injuries, he failed to regain consciousness. The doctor counseled the donor, Basavarj’s family to donate his organs after he had stopped responding to treatment.
Basavraj was shifted to BGS Global Hospitals on March 24 from Sapthagiri Hospitals.
Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) coordinated with the BGS Global Hospitals for the transplantation and accordingly Basavaraj’s heart, liver, kidneys and eyes were transported early morning.
Patients at M S Ramaiah Hospitals received his heart and kidney while his corneas were sent to Narayana Nethralaya.
A 43-year-old male patient whoi was on end stage liver disease was transplanted with the liver at BGS Global Hospitals. The kidney was transplanted on a patient at Narayana Health City.
Dr Venkatramana N K, vice chairman, BGS Global Hospitals, said that they were thankful to the family “Their decision for organ donation has given a new lease of life to six people,” he said.
Basavraj is survived by a 10-month-old son. One of the family members said that the money they used for the treatment was in fact saved for the child’s naming ceremony. Now with Basavraj’s death, the family would be in financial problems.
