Women must carve out a niche in male-dominated society: Sudha Murthy

Vijayapura: Admitting that it is difficult for women to achieve success in male-dominated society, Sudha Murthy, Writer and Head of Infosys Foundation has advised the women to strive hard in order to carve out a niche for themselves in the society.

In a prerecorded address as Chief Guest for the 12th Convocation of Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University here, she said that the girls should set a goal and never get distracted from it. “In order to achieve their goal, it is important to have complete focus on it. Since time is very crucial, the girls should use it judiciously and in a constructive way”, she said.

Stating that learning from mistakes is vital before others point it out, Murthy said that the students should learn from their mistakes, experience and from their teachers.

“We should all have courage to accept our mistakes and learn from them. Not everyone has the courage to accept the mistakes,” she said.

Suggesting the girls to think beyond their studies and personal life also, Murthy said that they should also dedicate some time for the welfare of society.

“One can serve society in many ways and not only with money. Instilling confidence among other girls to achieve their goal is also one of the services towards the society. The students who are passing out from this University, should always carry the service motto along with them,” she said.

Asserting that happiness is the greatest treasure, she advised the students to try to remain happy in their lives.

On the occasion, she also recited some of the Vachanas of Akkamahadevi  and said that she is a great inspiration for women. Informing that she was born in Jamkhandi Taluk in undivided Vijayapura District, she said that people of North Karnataka region are resilient and tough. She said that though she wanted to attend the event personally, however due to some prior engagements, she could not come.

Later, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot who attended the event held on Tuesday November 9 awarded PhD to 48 students and gold medals to 76 students. He also conferred honorary doctorate to three personalities, Janaki Srinivasmurthy for literature, Suma Sudhindra for music and Kalpana Saroj for entrepreneurship and women empowerment.
