Belagavi: Probable candidates resort to distributing sarees, electrical appliances, liquor and even cash to woodland But, in a rather bizarre incident, a BJP ticket aspirant resorted to distributing sanitary pads in slum areas in Belagavi.
If sources are to be believed then over 5000 packs of sanitary pads have been distributed.
The issue came to light on Wednesday, when some women from Srinagar’s slum area alleged that BJP’s Anil Benake embarrassed them by handing over sanitary pads while asking them to cast their votes in his favour. The slum dwellers handed over a memorandum to the District administration demanding action against Benake, stating that he resorted to distributing pads on March 29, after model code of conduct was brought into effect.
Talking about the same, Benake, who owned up the episode, said that the move was taken to spread awareness among women by an NGO and not keeping elections in mind.
“We distributed pads to create awareness on personal hygiene. The entire exercise was carried out by women volunteers to avoid embarrassment. I had supported an NGO for this much needed work. While the entire project was started much before the code of conduct came into place, some are politicizing the issue by talking about it so many days after the incident,” Benake said.
