21 dead as truck topples at Belgaum

Belgaum: More than 21 people have been killed after a truck toppled at Soudatti, 40 km from Belgaum district in northern Karnataka, at around 4.30 am on Saturday November 16.

The mini-truck that was carrying almost 50 people, out of which 35 are injured and other were killed. The dead include seven women and six children. The accident occurred when the truck overturned killing them on the spot.

The initial reports reveal that mainly tribal laborers from Yadgir in Karnataka were on their way to work on sugarcane plantations in Maharashtra and few elderly victims were laborers who were travelling to work in agriculture fields on daily wages.

Moreover the reports also states that the truck was travelling on an extreme speed and toppled while on a bad stretch on the state highway, it is also suspected as it was a mini-truck the number of passenger were more than the limited capacity.

The local police confirmed that the injured have been admitted to Bailahongal in Belgaum. The Police have also registered a case against the driver and the vehicle’s owner under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rash and negligent driving resulting in deaths.
