Dubai: The 18th episode of talk show Subalterns by Village TV Trust, Mangaluru and Loyola Degree College, Bengaluru was aired on Friday April 1 at 6.30 pm IST.

The event host was Kiran Nirkan. Y. Mariswami, Social Activist spoke on topic, ‘Thalasamudaya and Shikshana’. The weekly programme was aired in Kannada.

The goal of ‘P2P – Local to Global’ is to provide a platform for unheard young voices in society and thereby create a supportive environment.

Defining ‘Talasamudaaya'( Backward Community) Y. Mariswami stated, “The communities which are socially, economically and educationally backward in a caste based social strata is regarded Talasamudaya.”

Putting forth his insight on Educational status of Backward caste Pre-independence he said, “The door towards education was completely shut for these communities. Until mid 18th century, these communities worked as slaves for cheap labour. Education then was open only for certain communities. Post independece, the changes in Educational status of backward communities are obseverd because of the reservation facility, he stressed. But Indeed its the fact that changes have come in, but not to an expected level. Rationality and scientific temper are the gifts, the community received from education, he noted.

Specifying girls and women education he said, “In case of women, both caste and gender descrimination has played a vital role in their suppression. Equality is the ‘breath and objective’ of Indian constitution. Inspite of Central Government programmes like ‘Beti Bachavo – Beti Padao’ women were the one’s highly-affected during pandemic. They had to deal with trafficking, child marriage and malnutrition like evils. There Indeed is an improvement in girls’ education but no revolution has erupted in this field, he noted.

Speaking on ‘New Education Policy’ he appreciated the welcoming aims and objectives involved under the policy. He also noted that, he found no drawbacks for backward communities through the new policy. And advised people to accept the policy as a massive social revolution.

Expressing his view on defamation faced by an opinionated women Y. Mariswami said, “We are looking at women community with the male dominated spectacles and that is the main reason for all such happenings. And he also appealed the government on bringing In bar on porn sites, which are turning out to be a prime cause for harrassment on women. He also discussed on the loopholes in Implementation of 25% reservation through RTE Act and stressed saying that government has to extend this reservation to even minority institutions.

As an advice to the audience he recalled the words of Justice Shivraj Patel and said, “Do not make assets for your kids but make them the asset by imparting them qualitative education”.

Dr. Kumaraswamy Bijjihalli, Kannada Department Head at Loyola College made his presence in the event and expressed his consensus on Mariswami’s talk.

Kiran Nirkan expressed gratitude to the guests and signed off the session.
