Abu Dhabi: Academics take precedence for many parents when it comes to their children. They prioritize it over achievements in other areas, often irrespective of their child’s talents. It’s understandable considering the limited opportunities and financial uncertainties involved in pursuing activities like sports at the highest level. However, there are exceptions to this norm, such as John D’Souza. He granted his son Ethan the freedom to pursue cricket full-time, and that decision paid off handsomely.

Parental Support and Cricket Success: Journey of Ethan D'Souza

At the age of 17, Ethan has now been selected for the UAE senior national team in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies.

Ethan acknowledges the invaluable support he receives from his parents. Speaking to The National, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s very helpful when your parents support. Whether I succeed or not in my cricket, I know their support will always remain the same.” Ethan’s father, John, has been going the extra mile for his son’s training and matches, commuting between Abu Dhabi and Dubai for the past two months. Witnessing such sacrifices and unwavering support, Ethan is motivated to work even harder, score more runs, and excel in every game. He aspires to carve out a name for himself and make his family proud.

Being part of the senior national team is a significant leap forward for Ethan. He aims to elevate his game by competing with established players and dreams of securing a regular spot in the playing XI. Every aspiring athlete dreams of participating in a World Cup or reaching the pinnacle of their chosen sport, and Ethan is no exception. He intends to remain part of the senior national team squad for the next two years, regardless of whether he gets playing opportunities or not.

Ethan’s remarkable progress in the past year has been noteworthy. His involvement in the Emirates D20 last year with the Abu Dhabi team proved to be a turning point. Despite limited chances to bat, his electrifying fielding skills earned him recognition. Ethan played all 12 games, taking nine catches and being involved in two run-outs. Reflecting on this experience, he acknowledged the significance, stating, “That was a huge step up for me. I have been moving forward at a fast pace since.”

John D’Souza credits Abu Dhabi Indian School, Al Wathba, for providing the right structure and environment for Ethan’s development. The school has been supportive, accommodating his cricket commitments while ensuring he receives additional classes and support to keep up with his studies. While not focused on attaining top scores, they aim for Ethan to complete the basics and secure a place in a university, potentially through a scholarship.

Ethan’s journey started at a young age, playing cricket with his father inside their house. Recognizing his natural talent, a family friend presented him with a bat on his third birthday, which he still cherishes. Enrolling at the Zayed Cricket Academy at the age of seven and a half, Ethan’s passion and dedication flourished. His coaches at the academy played a pivotal role in his development, and he remains grateful for their guidance.

As Ethan prepares for his 12th-grade board exams in March next year, he has struck a balance between academics and cricket. His teachers commend his progress, and he looks forward to appearing for the exams while pursuing his cricket career simultaneously. Although he had admired Virat Kohli while growing up, Ethan now finds inspiration in the current UAE captain, Muhammad Waseem. He admires Waseem’s positive approach and looks forward to playing alongside him.

Ethan holds great respect and gratitude for his school, teachers, and mentors at the academy. Despite missing classes due to cricket commitments, his teachers have supported him in catching up. He draws inspiration from other UAE cricketers who have succeeded academically, knowing that he too can achieve a balance between sports and education.

In Ethan’s journey, the unwavering support of his parents, the guidance of his coaches, and the flexibility of his school have played pivotal roles. With his selection in the UAE senior national team, Ethan is poised to continue his growth in cricket while pursuing his academic aspirations.
