Rajasthan: In a shocking development, Rajasthan State Commission for Women’s member, Soumya Gurjar, took a selfie with a rape survivor who was tattooed with expletives by her husband and his brothers.

Surprisingly, after the move attracted criticism, Chairperson of the Commission, Suman Sharma has demanded in writing an explanation from Gurjar, despite the fact that the selfie also features Sharma herself.

After the news of the women’s torture and attack came from Alwar district, Sharma and Gurjar went to meet the victim on Wednesday.

“I was talking to the victim when the member of the commission clicked these selfies. I am not aware when she (Somya Gurjar) clicked. I do not favour such act and have sought a written explanation from her. She has been asked to submit the explanation by tomorrow,” Sharma is quoted. However, the images show Sharma clearly looking into the camera when the selfies were being clicked.

The 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her husband and his two brothers who tattooed expletives on her forehead and hand for not giving Rs 51,000 as the dowry. An FIR has been registered under sections of 498-A (Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act), 376 (punishment for rape) and 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of IPC and an investigation in the case has been initiated, he said.

The victim was married to Jagannath in Reni village. She alleged that since her marriage in January 2015, her husband and in-laws used to beat her up and demand dowry.

She has been living with her parents since then, Mahila police station SHO Abdul Wahid said, adding the woman has still marks on her forehead and hand.
