The surge in unauthorized air conditioner (AC) usage among Kolkata residents to combat the intense summer heat is exerting significant strain on the city’s power grid. Despite appeals from authorities to obtain proper authorization before installing ACs, a large portion of the populace continues to do so without official sanction, exacerbating power supply challenges.

Data and Concerns

According to the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC), only 34,850 applications for new AC connections were received between March 1 and April 15. In contrast, an estimated 1.5 lakh AC units were purchased during this period, with approximately 80% of ACs being utilized without proper authorization. This unregulated usage is leading to frequent power fluctuations, prompting urgent intervention from state authorities.

Addressing the Issue

State Power Minister Aroop Biswas has convened an emergency meeting to address the escalating issue and devise solutions to ensure stable electricity supply in Kolkata. Despite the CESC processing a substantial number of applications for additional load, the disparity between sanctioned load and actual consumption remains significant, exacerbating grid strain.

Urgent Appeals and Challenges

CESC officials emphasize the importance of obtaining authorization before installing appliances that consume high amounts of power, such as ACs. Unauthorized AC usage not only burdens the local power grid but also risks automatic shutdowns and prolonged power cuts. The situation has prompted appeals from CESC officials urging residents to obtain proper authorization before utilizing ACs to alleviate strain on the system.

Impact and Regional Challenges

Unprecedented power cuts are being experienced in areas such as Bhowanipore, Kasba, Hastings, and Ballygunge, where unauthorized AC usage has surged due to recent urban development. Similar challenges are reported by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), which has observed a significant rise in power demand without commensurate authorization.

Weather Conditions and Relief

Amidst scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C, the Meteorological Department forecasts continued heatwave conditions till Saturday, with some respite expected from Sunday onwards. Despite the heatwave, certain districts in Bengal may witness thunderstorms and rainfall, offering temporary relief from the sweltering heat.

Conclusion

The unauthorized usage of ACs poses a significant challenge to Kolkata’s power infrastructure, necessitating immediate measures to curb unregulated consumption and ensure the stability of the power grid. As efforts continue to address this issue, residents are urged to adhere to regulatory guidelines and obtain proper authorization before installing AC units to mitigate strain on the city’s power supply.
