Bareilly: Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has taken swift action three days after family members discovered the eyes missing from the body of a 20-year-old woman. On Friday, Pathak suspended Budaun’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Pradeep Varshney, with “immediate effect,” citing “negligence towards his duties” as the reason for the suspension. Two doctors who were part of the autopsy team have been arrested and sent to jail.

The incident, brought to light on Monday, prompted Budaun District Magistrate Manoj Kumar to order a magisterial inquiry. A panel of three doctors, including a female physician, conducted a second autopsy on Tuesday, confirming the absence of both eyeballs. An FIR was subsequently filed against the initial autopsy team under IPC section 297 (trespassing on burial places) and section 18 of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act at Civil Lines police station. Doctors Mohd Arif and Mohd Uvais, who performed the initial autopsy, were arrested and jailed on Wednesday.

SSP, Budaun, OP Singh, stated, “The doctors who performed the autopsy said that the eyes were already missing from the body. They didn’t mention it in their report though. They were, prima facie, found guilty of negligence and sent to jail as there were allegations of organ trade against them. The findings of the eye specialists in this case will be a crucial part of the investigation, and we are waiting for the same. We will ensure an impartial investigation in this case.”
