Kanpur: A significant security scare unfolded when a 15-year-old high school student from Kanpur executed a prank call to Pune airport, falsely asserting that 40 IndiGo planes would be bombed in residential areas. The incident, which occurred on January 11, prompted a swift response from authorities.
Using his father’s mobile phone, the teenager conducted a Google search to obtain the contact number for the registered office of IndiGo at Pune airport. Subsequently, he made the threatening call, triggering a sequence of events. IndiGo informed Delhi police, who then alerted the Intelligence Bureau (IB). The information reached the Uttar Pradesh director general of police, leading to an investigation by Kanpur police.
Through electronic surveillance, the police traced the teenager to the Sen Para Paschim area. The boy, originally from Kushinagar, was living in a rented house with his family. A case was filed against him under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, and he was taken into custody for questioning.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Salman Taj Patil stated that the teenager confessed to making the call to gain media attention. Fortunately, the primary investigation revealed no credible threat, attributing the teenager’s actions to ignorance. After counseling the parents and family members, the child will be allowed to return home.
The investigation revealed that the boy got the idea for the prank call after watching videos related to the Palestine-Israel conflict on YouTube. The incident highlights the potential consequences of misinformation and the need for awareness and guidance among young individuals.
