The police said on Tuesday that a woman’s family allegedly set her husband’s house on fire, killing her parents-in-law, hours after the woman committed suicide in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, the fire also injured three more people, including the woman’s husband.
Anshika Kesarwani, the woman, was discovered hanging on Monday night at her in-laws’ home. In February of last year, the 27-year-old got married.
Anshika’s parents and other family members allegedly hurried to her in-laws’ home as soon as word of her passing spread, accusing them of pressuring the young woman for a dowry and pushing her toward suicide.
As the fight escalated, Anshika’s relatives allegedly set the house on fire. Both her mother-in-law and father-in-law were found dead after the blaze was put out.
According to Deepak Bhuker, the deputy commissioner of police for Prayagraj City, they received a call at 11 p.m. reporting that a woman had committed suicide.
“There was fighting between the parties when the police squad arrived on the scene. The woman’s mother set fire to the in-laws’ home during the argument. Five people were immediately rescued by police, who also notified the fire department,” he said.
Two bodies were found after the entire house was searched as the fire was put out around three in the morning, according to Mr. Bhuker.
